In my poetic documentary, "Beneath the Surface" I dove deep into the ancient art of spearfishing to uncover a world that transcends the dance of hunting beneath the waves. The central theme of this short documentary was to showcase the beauty of the ocean and specifically the importance of preserving it for future generations to come so that everyone can experience the beautiful underwater world. I also wanted to show from a different point of view of what lies beneath it as well as create a world of which impacts the audience in a way that makes them want to go out and explore it for themselves. Through a carefully curated blend of visuals, emotions, and narration in French, I aim to bring to light the profound connections between humanity, the ocean, and the art of spearfishing.
Spearfishing, an age-old practice that melds skill, patience, and respect for the marine environment, is at the heart of my exploration. This documentary delves beyond the surface, aiming to capture the essence of spearfishing as more than a sport or technique; it's a spiritual communion between man and nature. By juxtaposing breath-taking underwater visuals with the raw, unfiltered emotions of both the hunters and the hunted, I seek to provide viewers with a multi-sensory experience that sparks contemplation towards experiencing the beautiful aquatic world as well as respecting it and preserving it for all to enjoy.
Through the lens of my camera, I navigate the uncharted waters of human connection with the ocean, revealing the harmonious rhythm that exists between seasoned spear-fishermen and the underwater world they navigate. Each shot is a stroke of poetry, a visual metaphor that mirrors the ebb and flow of life itself. By allowing these images to breathe in their natural beauty, I enable the audience to immerse themselves in a realm where time slows down, and nature's wonders take centre stage.
"Beneath the Surface" is a homage to the art of spearfishing, an ode to the primal connection between humanity and the ocean. As an artist, I invite viewers to suspend their preconceived notions and embark on a journey that transcends the physical act of hunting. This documentary is an offering—a tribute to the timeless relationship between man and sea, a dance of life and death that has echoed through generations.
Ultimately, my goal is to show the perspective of the spear fisherman and show viewers the way he feels during his descent, he isn’t fearless, and he isn’t always perfect on the shot yet he still perseveres through thick and thin. I want to awaken a sense of wonder and reverence for the intricate web of life that thrives beneath the waves. This poetic documentary is a visual and emotional symphony that beckons the audience to dive deep, not only into the world of spearfishing but to hold their breath and dive into the depths of their own perceptions, reflections, and emotions.
